Canyon and bluff lots frequently need retention to create usable pad area — we build walls around drainage first, structure second.

A 4-inch perforated pipe in 3/4-inch gravel, filter fabric, weep holes at 8-foot intervals, and waterproofing on the retained face — hydrostatic pressure fails more walls than undersized concrete.

Walls over 4 feet require a permit and stamped engineering in Malibu; we coordinate calculations with a licensed civil or structural engineer for walls carrying a surcharge.
Malibu's canyons combine steep grades, expansive clays, and shallow bedrock. We coordinate with the project's geotechnical engineer so footing depths, keyways, and reinforcement match the soils report rather than a generic detail.
Options include cantilever, counterfort, and gravity walls, plus soldier pile walls where excavation room is limited. Finishes range from board-form texture to smooth-form finish for architectural concrete on estate properties.
Walls over 4 feet measured from the bottom of the footing require a building permit and stamped engineering in Malibu.
Drainage — saturated soil behind a wall can add hundreds of pounds per square foot of lateral load. Every wall we build includes a perforated drain pipe, gravel, filter fabric, and weep holes.
We build engineered walls from 3 feet up past 10 feet; taller walls need more extensive footing and drainage design.
